About FindRehabMap

SAMHSA's locator tells you where programs are. It does not tell you how far a person in Garfield County, Montana, or Presidio County, Texas, has to travel to reach detox or methadone. FindRehabMap works that out for every U.S. county from public data. The site is free.

Data sources

• Program locations and services: SAMHSA FindTreatment.gov.
• County boundaries, population centers and population estimates: U.S. Census Bureau.

How distances are calculated

For each county we take the Census 2020 mean center of population and compute the straight-line distance to the nearest program of each type. Driving distances will be longer, especially in mountainous or rural areas.

Cleaning the data

Raw locator data has problems. Before calculating anything we dropped 3,764 records whose coordinates fell in a different state than their address, dropped 524 more whose map point was over 30 miles from the city they listed, and merged duplicate entries for the same program (same phone and location), which brought the list down to 18,226.

Limitations

Programs open, close and change services often. Call a program before you go to check services, insurance and whether it has openings. Being on the map is not an endorsement.
